As a dermatologist and medical practitioner, Dr. Thi Thien Nguyen Tran treats patients with skin disorders such as xerosis cutis and folliculitis.

Folliculitis is a frequent skin disorder that causes irritated hair follicles. It may appear as small red lumps or white-headed pimples surrounding hair follicles, the tiny crevices that sprout hair. The inflammation might spread and result in crusty, non-healing sores. Bacterial and fungal infections are the most common causes.

While an infection is the most prevalent cause of folliculitis, abiotic environmental factors such as heat can also cause the disorder. Warm moisture from sweat or occlusion trapped inside the skin pores is a leading environmental cause. This is why the disorder is so common in locations with frequent moist and warm weather, such as Florida.

Medications such as hormone replacement or testosterone can lead to irritated hair follicles too.
